Microsoft offering a bunch of freebies to celebrate the service reaching the 10 years in service milestone.
This week Microsoft is celebrating Xbox Live’s ten year anniversary and they want gamers to join in the fun.
For the rest of today and a little bit of tomorrow existing Xbox Live subscribers can download the Kinect-only title Wreckateer for free, and currently Castle Crashers, Fruit Ninja, Geometry Wars 2: Retro Evolved, Bastion, Peggle and Full House Poker are available to download for half-price.
According to Strategy Informer a special avatar helmet is also up for grabs, but we haven’t seen that yet.
“If the last 10 years is any indication of what’s possible in the next 10 years, imagine the innovation yet to come. One thing is for sure – we will continue to offer some of the best entertainment, from premium games, sports, TV, movies, web to music. To the members who’ve been with us since the beginning – I sincerely thank you, both for your support and your feedback. And for those of you that have just become members, a very warm welcome,” wrote Microsoft’s SVP of Xbox Live, Marc Whitten in a special message to fans.
“This year, we had an average of 9.4 million people a week using multi-player gaming on Xbox LIVE and in the 10 years of LIVE, nearly 14.5 billion Achievements have been unlocked worldwide, accumulating a total combined Gamerscore of more than 270 billion,” he added.
Xbox Live was a revolutionary service when it launched a decade ago and Microsoft’s achievement system has forever changed the way we play video games. Other services like Sony’s PlayStation Network have begun to snap away at Microsoft’s dominance with online infrastructure which arguably offers much more value with free games, cloud storage and other interesting perks, but that hasn’t stopped Microsoft’s service remaining immensely popular.
Over the past week alone (6th Nov’ to 13th Nov), members of Xbox Live accumulated over 442 million hours online – no doubt thanks to the release of Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
Certainly not a figure to be scoffed at…
