Microsoft sold 8.2 million Xbox 360 consoles between October 1st and December 31st 2011, the company has announced, making it the console’s most successful quarter in its six year history.
Sales of Xbox 360 grew by almost 30% compared to the same period in the previous year, with total lifetime sales now standing at 65.8 million.
Enhanced media functionality and a lower price point are likely to be the two key contributing factors to the Xbox 360′s growth in sales.
In November, Microsoft launched its new Metro dashboard update for the console, adding third-party video-on-demand services and improved voice support.
The Xbox 360′s previous highest-selling quarter had been Q2 2010, where 6.3 million consoles were sold.
The figures put Microsoft on track to have its most successful year yet with the console, despite ongoing rumours of the imminent announcement of its successor.
It’s rumoured that Microsoft will announce its successor to the Xbox 360 in June. But with figures like these, why rush?
