Today, Microsoft’s Xbox celebrates its 10th birthday, and so does its most endearing and enduring icon, Master Chief.
On November 15th 2001, Microsoft launched its giant console to a market previously dominated first by Nintendo, then Sony. It was large, unwieldy and ugly, but also extremely powerful, packing a hard drive and future-proofed for online connectivity.
Of course, the system was launched with the wildly succesful Halo: Cpombnat Evolved, which sees its own 10th anniversary edition released on 360 today in the US and on Friday in the UK. Other launch games included Dead Or Alive 3, Amped and Project Gotham Racing from the now sadly defunct Bizarre Creations.
The machine sold some 24 million units before it was discontinued in 2006 and superseded by the Xbox 360.
Happy birthday!
