Suzuki to leave Sega role

Published on June 26th, 2011

Famed video game designer is to leave his current role at this September.

Speaking with industry website Gamasutra, Suzuki confirmed he would step down from his role at Sega’s Amusement R&D division but will remain as an advisor.

“In 2008 I established YS NET, my current company,” he said. “I’ll be leaving my current job at Sega this September, and after that point I’ll remain on as an advisor.”

Suzuki says he will continue to pursue personal projects with his own company YS NET established in 2008.

“I’ve formally been with both companies from 2008 until September 2011. With the new company, I’ve been doing pretty much what I personally want to do myself.”

Yu Suzuki’s previous works date back to Sega’s popular arcade titles including Out Run, Space Harrier, Afterburner, and the Virtua Fighter series.

The series remains one of Suzuki’s and the video game industry’s most ambitious titles in gaming costing Sega around $70 million (both and II) to develop.

Due to underwhelming sales, Sega cut Shenmue’s story short leaving his magnum opus unfinished.

Suzuki made headlines last year with the announcement of Shenmue City, a social game set in the game’s universe.

Shenmue City is expected to make the leap to iOS and other mobile platforms in the future.
