Shenmue HD is real, finished 'for well over a year'An HD port of Shenmue is indeed heading to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and development on the title has been “finished for well over a year”, according to an industry source speaking to GamerZines.

Our source, who wishes to remain anonymous but does have ties to SEGA, told us that “Shenmue HD is real [and has been] finished for well over a year.

“As is Shenmue II HD”.

So, if true, why has SEGA held off on releasing them?

According to our insider, SEGA chose to sit on their release until it had a clearer picture of the future for the Shenmue franchise, namely, whether or not Shenmue III would ever see the light of day.

SEGA teased earlier this week that it “may be working on” an HD port of Shenmue.

An XBLA release has been rumoured since April 2010 when the game allegedly turned up on a secret developer test network.

Is there no chance of a PC release? They are releasing Jet Set Radio HD on PC and have been releasing other games on PC, so it would be amazing if Shenmue HD was as well.

well since its a PS1 game and that sega doesn’t want to put more money and time into it i doubt it

Did you mean Dreamcast game? Shenmue 1 was released on DC, and Shenmue 2 was released on DC and XBOX. I can see how Jet Set Radio HD would be easier to port to the PC, and a bigger game like Shenmue may be hard to port over, though. But if they could just port over the XBOX version, they could even require a XBOX controller and still make a lot of people happy.

oh this is gonna piss off a lot of fans. and anybody who calls himself a real shenmue fan would be REALLY pissed off if they actually did a shenmue 3 but released it at the end of this awful console cycle. because THE thing that made shenmue so amazing back then was how stunningly beautiful it was. and there’s no way one can achieve that on current consoles.

I wish they would release this like they did Resident Evil 4, so it would get the full 1000GS. *sigh* I need therapy for this addiction.

@Matt Nolan – Shenmue was released way earlier than dreamcast,…its first release was on sega saturn then dreamcast, xbox, and pc and mobile (only japan has access to the pc and mobile versions of “shenmue city”)…..

      @Johnathan Stoffregen – WOW! lol,…wrong system dude! lol…

In my opinion it’s nice to keep this game alive and pushed through XBLA and PSN, but in the same sense, I dont agree that this should come out again…. Don’t get me wrong, I’mm a very huge fan of the Shenmue series, I can play both of them back to back for weeks at a time without playing any other games. But I feel that because the Shenmue series is a cliffhanger, why bring it back? As much as everyone wants a Shenmue 3, it’s a very unlikely chance that we will have that. So again, why continue to push a 2 Game cliffhanger?? Knowing that the game is a cliffhanger, and nobody will ever know the fate of Ryo Hazuki, his friends, or Lan Di and the Chiyoumen. It’s such an epic storyline, and even more epic cliffhanger. My thoughts are, unless Sega’s able to get Yu Suzuki to complete and have Shenmue 3 on the market, anytime soon, stop promoting this… Yes, it is a classic, even though this game was not marketed or promoted at all the right way, and yes the people that played this game fell in love with it as soon as they played it. But more importantly is, nobody can tell you how it ends!! Its a great story and all great stories must come to an end, but instead of pushing to have a great ending for all of the fans as expected, its a cliffhanger and a 5+ year wait to even discuss a HD version to the same game with no ending…. smh

@Spazz Black: No, it was never released on the Saturn, it was tested on the Saturn.

sega are rite up there with EA games now a greedy game company that only cares about money i wish they would hurry the fuck up and bring these games out and make a shenmue 3 and get it over with

    12. Posted by john ellis on March 21st, 2012, 14:55

I really hope they release this soon, i loved the original games and want to play them on the PS3 if they release it only on the XBox I’ll end up getting a XBOX later in life. If shenmue 3 appears and give closure I would be in heaven. i always see loads of people that want to see a shenmue 3. the remake of shenmue 2 on the x box didn’t go to well as you couldn’t copy over a old save from the 1st game which was a shame as you lost some great moves and lots of money that you could use before the 1st QT incident that causes the story to start properly

@john ellis: That’s why I would love it on PC, if it could be played on “Windows” you can played Shenmue 1 – 2 – 3 – etc XD… without thinking in compatibilities, use of save games, and is possible to update the game (something like steam does)… another advantage is Windows is thinking for compatibility for many years… you can develop a game and make support or still sell it for a couple of generations (I still can play games for Win95 on Win7 32 without problems).

I’d have a geekgasum if they released this on the pc but i wonder how hard it would be to port this game to the pc from the console versions.

why on the xbox live arcade and playstation network ???? why not on the blu-ray disc and dvd ???????????????????????????????? dematerialise = shame…we wants shenmue and skies of arcadia on physical support !!!!!

    15. Posted by BongHeed on June 21st, 2012, 16:32

@vanfanel59 “why not on the blu-ray disc and dvd”
well in my opinion id rather see the game as XBLA/PSN, why? well im pretty sure game shops (after a month or so) will start reducing the price as well as those ppl that trade the game in after playing the it.
(not to forget those who target pre-owned
games instead of buying when its brand new)
If there is to be any chance at a shenmue 3 then sega will NEED all the sales they can get and sadly knowing xbox, they probly will never reduce the price of there “on demand” games.

So sad because still no sign of a port of Shenmue to current-gen consoles.

      Was this news a hoax?

      :-(
