Legendary games designer Yu Suzuki has said the influence of his magnum opus ‘Shenmue’ has changed many games including the Final Fantasy series.
In an interview with former 1UP editor James Mielke, the designer spoke about the influences many of his creations including Shenmue have had on the industry.
"Since I entered Sega in ’83 I made Taikan games and that became a trend or shift in the industry," said the famed designer. "That was my first influence. The second one was the shift from 2D to 3D graphics. I think my influence was pretty significant then."
Suzuki went on to talk about his most ambitious series, Shenmue, which still to this day was fans clamouring for a conclusion to its compelling tale of a teen seeking revenge for his father’s death.
"After that, I think it was Shenmue. Shenmue changed Final Fantasy and many other games. So, although there’s only 40 years of gaming history, I feel that the things that I have done have shifted the industry as a whole."
Shenmue World, a mobile game that used elements of the series universe and storytelling is releasing in Japan this month.
