Rock Band Blitz is downloadable, ditches plastic guitars

Rock Band Blitz is downloadable, ditches plastic guitarsHarmonix has announced Rock Band Blitz, a downloadable peripheral-free spin-off to its core rhythm action series due for release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer.

The game ditches the series’ famous plastic guitars and drums in favour of a standard controller, retaining the game’s runway gameplay as players jam their way through songs.

We think it looks a lot like Harmonix’s PSP Rock Band game, Rock Band Unplugged, but responding to a comment we made on Twitter, the studio’s Director of Communications & Brand Management John Drake told us that it was “wayyyyy more than that”.

The game will include 20 tracks, but will also be compatible with almost every song in the Rock Band Music Store. You’ll also be able to export songs from previous Rock Band games to play in Blitz.

Rock Band Blitz will be Harmonix’s first new Rock Band game since October 2010, when the studio launched the criminally under-performing Rock Band 3.

The game’s disappointing sales reportedly saw the company sold to investment group Columbus Nova for just $50.

A price and exact release date for Rock Band Blitz are still to be announced.
