Contrary to what was expected after Free Radical Design, the developer behind the Timesplitters series, went into administration in 2009, the first person shooter may make a comeback after all.
Free Radical Design was taken over by Crytek and with eyes firmly set on creating its ground-breaking shooter, Crysis, many thought that it was the end for Timesplitters. However, Crytek UK boss Karl Hilton has now confirmed that the company is in talks with publishers regarding a new entry in the series.
"We’re talking to publishers at the moment about whether TimeSplitters a viable route or not. Obviously TimeSplitters is a FPS with a strong multiplayer element," Hilton told Eurogamer.
"The question is, is that the way to go with another one, or should it go down a different route, or should we be developing a new IP altogether? It’s down to us talking to publishers about what their interest is and where they see it going. If they’re keen for a TS game, then we’d be happy to do one. If they’d like us to develop something new then we’d do that."
So, the future of Timesplitters is firmly in the hands of publishers. Let’s hope someone steps forward to resurrect Timesplitters 4, which Free Radical Design started but never completed. With Crytek behind it, there’s real hope for the series.
