Prequel and class-based multiplayer system confirmed.
Following last week’s Game Informer reveal, it has been confirmed that the next game in the Gears of War series will be named Gears of War: Judgement.
The game is in development with Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly and will follow the story of Damon Baird and Augustus Cole aka The Cole Train of previous Gears fame as part of Kilo squad.
As previously hinted at, Judgement will be a prequel set 15 years before the original Gears of War.
“People Can Fly is heavily involved in both the campaign and multiplayer, but especially the campaign,” said Fergusson.
“This is something we have initiated. We proposed the story and the gameplay hooks. Basically everything about campaign was initiated by People Can Fly. Obviously there is heavy involvement from Epic. I like to think about as the best of both worlds. On one hand we bring something fresh to the franchise, but on the other hand we have the original creators making sure it’s still Gears.”
As hinted at by Game Informer’s cover art, the squad will stand trial for transgressions against the Coalition of Governments.
“The testimonies are being over seen by Colonel Loomis, a by the-books COG leader who accused the team of desertion, cowardice, trespassing, theft of experiment military tech and treason,” revealed Epic Games’s director of production Rod Fergusson.
Gears’s multiplayer will be overhauled with a class-based system for both COGs and Locust enemies. Cog vs. Locust mode, Overrun, is also said to have a Team Fortress 2/DOTA 2-style of play.
Traditional multiplayer modes including Horde is expected to make a return in Judgement.

A full-scale reveal is slated for Microsoft’s E3 presser later this afternoon.
