Dead Space 2 is here, and while it’s unquestionably a superior piece of software, it’s not the most original piece of work we here at GamerZines has ever seen.
So which games does Visceral’s finest ‘borrow’ from?
1 Resident Evil 4
It’s the obvious choice, but there’s no denying Dead Space’s debt to the finest action game of all. The pacing, the combat and the bosses all scream Resi 4, as do the sparing but well-utilised QTEs.
2. Uncharted 2
The chatty lead, the increased focus on camera-tilting set-pieces and the general level of spectacle all bring Naughty Dog’s famous sequel to mind. Dead Space 2 might not be a cheery romp like Uncharted 2, but it can match it moment-to-moment.
3. Left 4 Dead
Dead Space 2′s multiplayer is a fairly direct lift from Left 4 Dead’s versus mode. Playing as the Necromorphs is fun, but ultimately the mode feels tacked on and barely worth it. Thankfully it doesn’t seem to have taken up too much development time or resources.
4. FEAR
With Dead Space 2′s increased focus on ‘Stasis’, or bullet-time, there’s more than an air of FEAR’s slo-mo ballet of violence to the combat. Slicing off limbs in slow motion then firing them at a baby – isn’t that what Dead Space is all about?
5. Dead Space
In truth, the first Dead Space innovated in so many subtle and clever ways, it was always going to be impossible for the sequel to maintain it. The inventory, the anti-grav, the vacuums – they’re improved here, but there’s nothing else of that calibre.
