2010s Collectors Editions

Published on December 21st, 2010

5. Tron: Evolution

Okay so Tron: Legacy was great, but Evolution…not so much. Occasionally disappointing games get collectors’ editions, but it was the price tag that made this bundle particularly nuts. For around $130 you received the game, a coupon to get money off a ticket to see Disney’s tie-in feature film and a teeny-tiny scaled replica of a modern lightcycle from the franchise. That’s it, nothing else. So effectively you’re paying more than double the game’s standalone asking price for just an action figure, which you could probably find a better version for less cash elsewhere. Not the most enticing deal, we’re sure you will agree.

4. Gran Turismo 5 Signature Edition

We get it Sony. Fans waited half a decade for Polyphony Digital’s driving powerhouse, so surely they had saved up enough money to buy a bloated ‘Signature Edition’ which includes a glorified model car, an art book (they are cars people), tips magazine (drive fast, win money), a key ring and fob. Wait, there was also an ‘Obsidian Black’ case bundled to store all this tat in as well, but seriously £129.99? We could actually buy a real car for that much. A rubbish car that’s only ever a kilometre away from breaking down, but a car nonetheless. We should have known Sony Europe were having a laugh at our expense when they bundled a leather wallet with the premier edition as well.

3. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood: Collector’s Edition

God bless Ubisoft, they can always be relied upon for a tasty collector’s edition, but this creepy as hell set included paraphernalia that should remain in shrinkwrap forever! This edition included a soundtrack CD; fine, an art book; great, a behind the scenes DVD, some short preview comics and what can only be described as a twisted jack in the box that you, your kids and your grandchildren will be haunted by for decades to come. Thankfully this abomination was exclusive to the US and was priced at around $100 which was only marginally more expensive than the regular edition so it really wasn’t too bad. Just make sure you don’t look into the eyes of the jack in the box, it will steal your soul!

2. BioShock 2: Special Edition

Just because a collector’s edition is absurd that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it, as 2K really pulled out all the stops to try and offer fans something above and beyond the usual value these kind of deals provide. First off there was a bulky art-book bundled with the game which took you behind the scenes by showing concept art, storyboards and like, as well as a soundtrack on CD and vinyl. The record got all the attention when this was released earlier in the year, but the really bonkers inclusions were the posters which seemed like regular Rapture propaganda until you scanned them with a UV light to reveal anarchist slogans. It’s the amount of attention which has been paid to this addition which is truly absurd and as it was priced at only £60 offered considerable value.

1. Record of Agarest War: Really Naughty Limited Edition

Trust this perverted JRPG to top this end of year list. For $60 players got a soundtrack CD, art book and some rather questionable items in the guise of a mouse pad which accentuates one of the lead character’s front jigglys and most unsettling of all, a pink pillowcase adorned with suggestively poised lead lady, Alice. Now far be it from us to judge those who purchased this pack, but we do wonder what exactly was done with those very special items. Perhaps it’s not worth thinking about.

The pictures of all these special offerings can be seen below.
