In the third and final part of our interview with Modern Warfare's 2 Lead Multiplayer Designer Todd Alderman, we discuss how the PC version differs from its console cousins and Treyarch 'ripping off' Call of Duty 4 for last year's World at War...
GamerZines: How do you take into account some people having the tendency to always use the same Perks?
Todd Alderman: It's something we take into consideration, but there are so many different options now? For example, we still have Stopping Power, but some of the things you can pick against it are Lightweight that makes you run faster. Let's say you're a riot shield guy, Stopping Power's not going to help you, but Lightweight will. Or Cold-blooded, which makes you invisible to all the Killstreaks. If the enemy calls in a helicopter it'll ignore you, or if they're in an AC-130 they won't see your targeting reticule, so it's pretty powerful but you don't have Stopping Power, sorry! Then there's Hardline which gives you killstreaks faster, so there's so much stuff there and so many different ways to play that there isn't that same thing that you have to use all the time.
GZ: Are you able to say how many maps there are?
TA: No, but there are lots of maps. Lots.
GZ: Are they based on the single-player portion of the game?
TA: No, there's a lot of sharing back and forth, just like the last game. But nothing is like, here's a single player map, let's make it multiplayer or vice-versa. We share across, like if someone's got a really cool building we'll modify it so it'll work.
GZ: Which type of Call of Duty game do you prefer to make, because with the original games you had a certain amount of historical accuracy you had to follow, whereas with these you're given much more creative freedom??
TA: I like making Modern Warfare. It's a lot of fun.

TA: It's mostly the obvious technical differences. On PC we have our own matchmaking system, because we can't use Xbox Live or PSN. Little things like that here and there, and little balancing tweaks for the control difference, but other than that they're pretty much the same.
GZ: Do you play other FPSs in your spare time?
TA: Totally.
GZ: Do you take inspiration from them?
TA: I take inspiration from everything. I play bad games and try to take the good parts. If you're not looking at everything then you're not trying. You don't want to rip people off but you just want to say 'hey that works, how would something like that work in my game?' So you adapt it for your game, potentially, or make something new. I like to see what other people are doing.
GZ: On that note, obviously World At War ripped you off?
TA: Damn?
GZ: Have you taken anything from that though that you thought was pretty cool Todd laughs, like Nazi Zombies, and used it for MW2?
TA: Not that I know of? Maybe something?
