Bayonetta. It's really quite something. The killer new speed-brawler from Platinum Games has been tearing up the Japanese sales charts and performing beautifully in import reviews already, and we've been lucky enough to have had extensive time with the PAL code in the lead up to our review in the next issue of 360Zine.
If you've played the demo, you know what to expect. It's a lighting-fast action game that's heavy on style, humour and ridiculous combos. Like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe before it, Bayonetta's combat is something to be learned, studied and mastered. As god as the demo is, it doesn't give you the scope to really understand what's going on beneath the Umbran Witches' bonnet, as it were.
So, why not prepare for its early January release with our quick combat guide, which will teach you the fundamentals that you need to know if you want to see your combo count soaring into the 100s!

By tugging the Right Trigger, you'll make Bayonetta dodge incoming attacks. Time it perfectly - just before she gets hit - and the game will slow down briefly, allowing you enough room to unleash a sizeable combo, and gain an advantage even when the number of enemies seems unsurmountable.
Instead of laying straight into a room full of bad guys, then, wait for them to come to you. Each enemy has a visual and aural clue as to when and where they're going to hit you, so keep eyes peeled and ears open, hit the Right Trigger at just the right time, and you've got the upper hand instantly. Seasoned players learn to line enemies up and chain Witch Time together to completely obliterate the opposition. It's the cornerstone to Bayonetta's combat.
Of course, just dodging and moving doesn't make for the most ostentatious attacking displays. Make sure you pay close attention to the loading screens and master a few combos for each weapon set up. As you progress through the game, you'll unlock weapons which you can assign to your hands or feet. Work out what you enjoy, then set up something complimentary for your secondary 'loadout'. Hitting the left trigger will swtich between the two.
For example, using the Katana as your main weapon and the Durga fists as your secondary allows you to stwich between speedy, nimble strikes and heavy, slower punches. Combining these style-switches with Witch Time is the key to unleashing huge damage.
As we get closer to our full Bayonetta review, we'll be putting up some combo, boss and general stylin' and profilin' Bayonetta videos, as well as a more in-depth combo tutorial. As for now, get back on the demo and put these techniques to use, and see how much success you have.
