A new entry in the highly lucrative Call of Duty series has been confirmed, but much to our surprise it won't be a first person shooter!

Activision revealed that the title, set for release in 2011, will be developed by its own studio, Sledgehammer Games, headed by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey who left the Electronic Arts subsidiary Visceral Games to form the company.

"In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

The Call of Duty series has long been one of the top first person shooter franchises, so branching out into what Activision describes as "the action-adventure genre" is obviously designed to maximise profits from the extremely popular Call of Duty brand.

It's going to be very interesting to see what they come up with.
