Valve's VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi has revealed that Left 4 Dead was the "1 selling new IP on two platforms" in North America last year.
Speaking to Industry Gamers, Lombardi stated that "last year, Valve spent more on consumer advertising than ever before and we saw great results in Left 4 Dead becoming the 1 selling new game IP on two platforms in North America."
But according to Lombardi, this year Valve is targeting the European market.

"This year, we simply added more outdoor markets and increased the television spend a little in North America. But in Europe we took the product to TV in countries where we've never used TV, and added more cities to the outdoor campaign."
Left 4 Dead, which released on Xbox 360 and PC in November 2008, launched to huge critical and commercial acclaim, with Lombardi revealing that pre-orders for the title were "just about tied with Half-Life 2 as the most pre-ordered game in Valve history". The game has since gone on to sell almost 3 million copies.
Its sequel, Left 4 Dead 2, launched on Xbox 360 and PC last week.
