Last week, Team17 announced that the first instalment of Alien Breed: Evolution was going to be released on the Xbox 360 on 16th December. The team has taken their classic Amiga game and next-gen'd it using the Unreal engine, but down the bottom of the press release was the line: "Initially exclusive to Xbox 360, the trilogy will also be available for PC and PlayStation3 in 2010."

Mark Baldwin from Team17 spoke exclusively to GamerZines to clarify the decision and the timings for the other platforms:

"To be honest, because of the success we had on the 360 with Worms, it made perfect sense to approach Microsoft with Alien Breed first. We were considering the episodic approach and wanted to talk to people who had experienced it, and Microsoft were really good. We had some great discussions and things just moved on from there."

Baldwin went on to say that "For the record we have a great working relationship with Sony and we can't wait for Alien Breed to hit there. We are expecting Episode 1 of Alien Breed to hit PSN some time 2nd quarter 2010 and PC to hit 1st Quarter."

What of the Wii, though, we had to ask, given the download service exists?

"We have no plans to release on Wiiware as yet."

Should have asked about the iPhone, now we come to think about it.

So there's the reason. Microsoft were just really helpful, but that doesn't mean there's not love there for Sony too.

If you've never experienced it, Alien Breed was a classic top down co-op shooter on the Amiga, which threw taut deadlines on clearing a level to complete it. It also had really cool weapons for the time. Given the days we lost to the original all those years ago, we're looking forward to seeing what Team17 has done with its new version.
