Variety is reporting that Universal has chosen a new director for its forthcoming film version of Ken Levine's aquatic think-piece Bioshock.

Intacto, Fresnadillo's belting Spanish-language debutJuan Carlos Fresnadillo has been pencilled in for the project, with original lensman Gore Verbinski opting to produce instead. The Tenerifean helmer has to be approved by publisher 2K Games before production can start, though we think that's a mere formality, and the film will lens overseas in the not-too-distant.

With the Pirates of the Caribbean director already committed to directing an animated film around the same time, the vacant director's chair was hurriedly filled by Fresnadillo, who directed excellent Spanish thriller Intacto and slightly less excellent not-zombie sequel 28 Weeks Later.

A splicer, the film editor's favourite character.Bioshock is reportedly one of the biggest films on Universal's slate - despite the budgetary constraints this isn't going to be chump change, with original production figures estimated at $160m. Evidently, the risks of basing a film on a videogame themed around Objectivist theory are a little too large for that kind of money, but there should be enough cash to splash to ensure Rapture's Art Deco interiors are lovingly recreated.
Anyone concerned about how well the game will translate to film can rest assured that the script at least is in good hands - Gladiator/Aviator scribe John Logan is on word-scrawling duty.
