With the Vanquish demo finally available to download on both PS3 and 360, it's high time to examine this revolutionary shooter's DNA. So here are the five games that make up Platinum's astonishing Vanquish.
5. kill.switch
The cover shooter that started them all is actually pre-dated by the dreadful Winback, but this is one that did it all properly. Cover-snapping, blindfire, sci-fi grey and a gruff hero. Seem familiar? kill.switch is often credited as the game which influenced Gears Of War, so by proxy, it has influenced Vanquish and its rapid cover-to-cover mentalness.
4. Jet Set Radio
Sam Gideon's incredible sliding is pretty similar to Jet Set Radio's infectious grinding. It makes you faster, for one, and it looks ridiculously cool, if a little impractical. Proof, if any were needed, that the knees are an overlooked area for augmentation.

Shinji Mikami's own weird arse-grinding shooter is all about dodging bullets and being stylish (and wiggling butt cheeks). It's less gruff than Vanquish, but you can see the blueprints as clear as day. Well, as clear as blueprints, anyway.
2. Metal Gear Solid 4
Come on, who DIDN'T see the ARS and immediately think 'Raiden'. It's bordering on pastiche, which considering how the MGS games are conceived, is itself bordering in paradox. Sam is like Raiden mixed with Snake. No bad thing.
1. Silent Bomber
The overlooked gem of the PSOne era, Silent Bomber was set on a space station, involved killing robots as a speedy guy in sci-fi armour, and was about as stylish and twitchy as games come. If Vanquish had more bombs you could chain together, it would be a full-blown sequel.
