When Max Payne first introduced the slow-motion feature, Bullet Time, it was fresh, new and innovative bringing a cinematic flair to the action genre that had never been seen before. Since then bullet-time, or variations of it, have featured in many games from Resident Evil 5 to John Woo's Stranglehold. Without bullet time, Max Payne 2 would have actually been a fairly run-of-the-mill shooter, and unless Max Payne 3 evolves the Bullet Time feature by bringing something new to the table we could be in for more of the same. Max Payne 2 was good, but we now want to see Max Payne really evolve and impress us like it did first time around.

We already know that Bullet Time is back for this third iteration and claims that it will be "more visceral and ultra-violent, gives us plenty of hope that it will live up to its billing. We also know they'll be all-new destructible environments, but that's a given in most shooters these days and isn't going to impress most people. Make no bones about it: Max Payne 3 is going to be made or broken by Bullet Time.
It's also going to be interesting to see what happens with the multiplayer side of things. We know that Rockstar will concentrate predominantly on creating an involving single player campaign, but we hope that doesn't mean that its multiplayer component is simply going to be an add-on just for the sake of it. Though it's Rockstar's Vancouver studio (Bully) that is working on Max Payne 3, and not GTA-creator's Rockstar North, we know that it will be powered by the RAGE engine from GTA IV. Isn't it possible then that we'll get a multiplayer experience similar to that game? Max Payne 3's multiplayer mode could well be a spin-off to the main campaign, set in the violent streets of Sao Paulo, perhaps with rival gangs warring against each other for territory and control. The likelihood of Bullet Time featuring in multiplayer seems slim considering the amount of effort that coders would have to go to implement it effectively. The multiplayer portion is sure to be a side show to the main campaign, so surely Rockstar wouldn't invest too much time and money into implementing Bullet Time online.
There's still a whole heap of questions about Max Payne 3 that we hope will be answered in the coming months. With an estimated release date set for late in 2010 we'd expect E3 in June to be the place to watch for further details.
