GamerZines Game Of The Year Awards: RPG Of The Year

We've lost way too many hours to RPGs this year, but which one turned out to be the best?

WINNER - DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS

Choices are difficult and this year BioWare made everyone ponder for hours over at least one of the hugely significant choices in this fantasy epic. Despite playing for seventy plus hours, we still weren't anywhere near finishing this absolutely massive game, but even during the more grindworthy moments we had an absolute blast, while the origin stories for each respective race and character type had us playing through multiple times just to see how our earlier decisions shaped our fate. There is no greater example of pure escapism in gaming than Dragon Age, and by our own admittance, we've found ourselves hooked head-over-heels when we had much more important things to be getting on with. One word of advice, though; play as a City Elf and you'll soon find out that BioWare aren't afraid of tackling 'hard' issues.

RUNNER UP - THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SPIRIT TRACKS

And deliver Zelda has with Link's latest 'on-rails' adventure. Okay, so it isn't on-rails in the typical video game sense, but the latest DS Zelda does see our trusty sword-swinger back on dry land as he gets behind the controls of a train. Filled with new ways to solve puzzles (including controlling the princess herself) and mixed with the inimitable Zelda charm, Spirit Tracks was a delightful return to form for our hero, and quite possibly the finest DS game we played all year.

RUNNER UP - MARIO & LUIGI: BOWSER'S INSIDE STORY

You did realise that the title had more of a literal meaning than you had perhaps been expecting, right? Bumping our favourite plumbers inside Bowser's gut, Bowser's Inside Story takes us on a wild adventure defeating baddies inhaled by the spikey-shelled fiend. The plot (and the entire game) may be ridiculous, but that's what made Bowser's Inside Story so fantastic, with the 20 hour adventure being funny, charming and thoroughly addictive. A DS classic? You better believe it.

ALSO-RANS: Risen, Kingdom hearts 358/2, Demon's Souls, Borderlands
