WINNER - MODERN WARFARE 2

There was only ever going to be one in the running when it came to this, wasn't there? With the advent of online play, it should come as no surprise to learn that the fastest selling game ever is also home to the best multiplayer experience we've ever played. That MW2 expands on the original's hugely addictive multiplayer component in every way is not only impressive, but a colossal achievement, further cementing Infinity Ward's status as being the ones to beat when it comes to online warfare.

Modern Warfare's fast-paced nature and constant sense of character development ensures that the game remains the most frenetic and addictive multiplayer title out there, while the bigger and better maps, increased amount of guns, killstreaks and customisation options guarantee that the action is more madcap and unpredictable than ever before.

More importantly (and perhaps most surprisingly, given the level of extras added to MW2's multiplayer), it's still one of the best balanced, most rewarding and most satisfying multiplayer games we've ever played. And, even six weeks after release, we're still playing it as much now as we were day one. We've got only one qualm, of course: bring back party chat!

RUNNER UP - HALO 3: ODST

Firefight, effectively a Gears of War 2-alike Horde mode that sees teams of four players fight off wave after wave of Brutes, Jackals and flying insect... thingies, went down a storm on Xbox Live when it launched back in September, and continues to be one of our favourites today.

And even if you weren't that great a fan of Firefight, ODST proved to be the ideal package when it came to providing the ultimate Halo multiplayer experience, shipping with a bonus disc loaded with every Halo 3 map ever released, including those additional (and, if we're honest, fairly expensive) Mythic and Legendary map packs.

RUNNER UP: LEFT 4 DEAD 2

It may essentially be nothing but a mod of the original game, but when it comes to team-based shooters Left 4 Dead 2 is still our game of choice. Nothing evokes that same sense of teamwork and frenzy of fighting for survival as well as the Left 4 Dead series, as you'll soon see from the screams from your teammates upon heading online.

There might not be much depth to it - heck, it's as shallow as Katie Price - but everything you could possibly want from a madcap, wildly entertaining zombie shooter is arguably present. And who can't help but laugh at the sight of your mates wildly flinging saucepans into the face of flesh-hungry corpses.

ALSO-RANS: New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Killzone 2, Guitar Hero 5
