WINNER - DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS
While Dragon Age: Origins may look at first glance to be standard fantasy fare, BioWare has crafted an entire set of cultures in which to place its epic story, and the quest structure allows you to progress the story as and when you see fit. There are genuine moments, moreso here than in Fable 2 even, where you are left uncertain as to which course of action is the morally correct thing to do, which gives you an investment in the game that other RPGs lack.
Even though BioWare has stuck to stereotypes to an extent, the story is compelling and well acted for the most part, but most of all, it can take unexpected turns leading you to decisions you didn't anticipate having to make, and as such drives you to continue playing in order to find out what happens. And that's the sign of a good story.
RUNNER UP - UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES
Capturing the same element of charm and endearment as Spielberg's classic, Naughty Dog's thrilling Indy-alike adventure is the one to beat when it comes to impeccable storytelling. From the thumping highs to the heart-wrenching lows, Uncharted 2's an emotional and often-hilarious tale of love, intrigue and betrayal that doesn't let up until the end credits. Featuring the best voice acting we've ever heard from a variety of veteran actors and actresses, Among Thieves is an example to everyone as to how storytelling and gameplay can seamlessly intertwine.
RUNNER UP - BRUTAL LEGEND
The funniest game we've played all year, Tim Schafer's laugh-out-loud Brutal Legend has Jack Black using all manner of cuss words and magical instruments to slay demonic beasties. Featuring an imaginative story, a memorable line-up of characters and some fantastic voiceovers provided by the biggest names in the world of metal, the only disappointment when it came to Brutal Legend was also the biggest; the game itself.
