WINNER - STREET FIGHTER IV
Following a dodgy few years, Capcom's classic fighter made a stunning comeback with the revival offered by the fourth numbered game in the series. Featuring a cast full of friendly faces and a move list filled with unmistakable combos (everyone knows how to pull off a hadouken, right?), Street Fighter IV offered up the ultimate fighting package to old and newcomers alike. And not only did it play well but it looked beautiful too, with the lovely stylised visuals adding a further layer of charm and intrigue to the whole thing. That we'll likely be referring to next year's Super Street Fighter IV as 2010's top fighter is a testament to how strong we believe the Street Fighter IV formula really is. An absolute knockout.

It may feature the worst single-player campaign mode we've played in any game this generation, but when it comes to one-on-one fighting, Tekken 6 proves that the fifteen year old fighter's still got it. With a character roster featuring fighters from across all six games, Tekken 6 turned out to be the ultimate package for fans of the button-basher. It may not be quite as technical as our winner, but Tekken 6's pick up and play gameplay, gorgeous visuals and addictive nature still found a place in our hearts.
RUNNER UP - PUNCH-OUT!!
We know many of you may be asking why Punch-Out!! is featured here while Fight Night gets featured in the sports category, but let us explain. To us, Punch Out! strikes us as much more an arcade fighter, than as a serious homage to the sport like Fight Night, and as such gets treated like one. And what a fantastic fighter it is, signifying a glorious return to the famous franchise with a variety of comic and incredibly well animated characters. It's our fighting game of choice on Wii, and one of the strongest games in the genre of 2009.
