Kirbys Epic Yarn Review

Published on February 28th, 2011

Platformers of late have been pretty grim haven’t they?

If Mickey’s adventure into Wasteland wasn’t bleak enough, the number of meaty heroes we’ve sent to their deaths reveals a truly mortifying statistic.

So it’s with open arms that we greet Kirby’s Epic Yarn, a mesmerizing jaunt that takes its pink pal’s new robes and weaves them into the game’s entire visage.

Kirby’s ravenous hunger lands him in Patch Land, he finds his bloated appearance is replaced with an outline made of yarn.

This theme transcends the entire breath of Epic Yarn turning each level into a patchwork quilt arranged from various fabrics and textures that Kirby can manipulate, tugging on loose buttons to draw platforms closer or slipping behind patches to discover hidden pockets of beads.

It’s an absolute joy to play, swapping harsh difficulty for a relatively carefree side-scroller.

The soundtrack perfectly highlights the moods of each woven vista and brief intervals which see Kirby transform into a plethora of objects and items including an adorable fire engine are hilariously entertaining.

In fact what little Epic Yarn offers in the way of challenge or penalty actually ends up playing in its favour.

Kirby’s braided universe is open to gamers of almost any age or skill level allowing a buddy to tag along in co-op (playing as Kirby’s close-knit friend Prince Fluff) and enjoy one of the most delightful and consistent games of our time.

Briefly Speaking:

Kirby’s Epic Yarn crosses the boundaries of game into work of art whose effortless creativity will leave even the most hardened gamer swooning over its charms. Short and simple but too adorable to be overlooked.

Score: 9
