And the battle rages on. Of course, we're not talking between good and evil here, or even rich and poor, but between the Marvel and DC universes. Which comic book franchise is superior? One has Batman, the other Hulk; one Superman, the other Spidey. Neither one can be classed as an outright loser, surely?

What is clear though, is that neither franchise has been home to particularly strong games in recent years. Batman's looking to change that on behalf of DC with his jaunt around Arkhum Asylum late next month, before Activision return with their Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series in the month after.

After a mishap in New York, all superheroes (and supervillains, for that matter) are required to register themselves as weapons of mass destruction. Some agree and some, understandably, don't, leading to the rise of two factions - those heroes in favour of registering and those heroes against. Of course, it's all just a big excuse for them all to engage in some fisticuffs.

And though it's the brawling that'll provide most of the entertainment within Ultimate Alliance 2 (the Fusion Moves are a particular highlight, allowing two characters to team up and utilise their unique abilities in a rip-roaring super move), the game's 'action RPG' premise should also offer entertainment for those looking for a far deeper Marvel experience.

Of course, we've all been burnt by mediocre comic book games in the past and so we wouldn't blame you to be wary of this one. But from what we've seen of Vicarious Visions' superhero-em-up so far at least, Ultimate Alliance 2 is looking like it won't disappoint when it launches this September.
