Sony reckons that publishers have finally twigged that third-party titles don't actually sell that well on Wii and are now ready to plunge their resources into development of PS3 games instead.
In an interview with IndustryGamers, Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations at SCEA, Rob Dyer, claims that publishers wanting a return on their games are defecting to Sony's console.
"What publishers have said is, they're not going to spend the resources on Wii...In my job, we compete against Microsoft and Nintendo, and we're competing for resources. So when I walk into a publisher, I ask, "Where are you guys pushing your resources?" In the past, it was, "Look how hot the Wii is," or "Look how hot the DS is," and "We should put resources there." They did that and realized, "You know what? Third-party product just doesn't sell on that platform."
A quick glance at the top selling games on Wii and you'll see what he means. The charts have long been dominated by the likes of Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resorts and New Super Mario Bros. Among those publishers discontent with their relationship with Nintendo is Electronic Arts who have been outspoken about this issue on more than one occasion.
"To be honest with you, I think the Wii platform has been a little weaker than we had certainly anticipated," said Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello in a conference call last year.
Whether third-party developers are seriously jumping ship and swimming across to Nintendo with the enthusiasm that Rob Dyer suggests is another question that we're sure Microsoft will have something to say about. If he is right, however, then we should expect many more PS3 exclusive titles coming our way.
