Sega has thrown down the gauntlet to platform holders to come and get Shenmue III, the game that fans of the adventure series have been longing for ever since its last iteration almost 10 years ago.
The Shenmue series was always meant to be a trilogy, but Sega lost a bucket load of cash when it launched the first two games on the Dreamcast. Sega blames this on the fact the the install base for Dreamcast was so small and the game cost was astronomical to develop, rumoured to be approximately $70 million.
In a feature in Japanese magazine, Famitsu, Sega says that it would love to finish the series if the appropriate backing came along and would be happy to make the game exclusive to one of the platform holders if they'd help fund the project.
Will Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo battle it out for control of the franchise though? We doubt it, they've got far too much on their plate this year. Gazing into our crystal ball though, we wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see Nintendo pick up the pieces at some point. Shenmue III on Wii 2 (HD) would be something to look forward to, wouldn't it?
Unsurprisingly, when we contacted Nintendo to ask it if it would ever be interested in picking up the exclusive rights to Shenmue III we were greeted with a stony, puzzled silence. We've at least the planted the seed though!
