We're sure we weren't the only ones hoping for Nintendo to announce an updated Wii console at last week's E3, but according to Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata, "there is (no) immediate need to replace the Wii console".
"I do not think that there is an immediate need to replace the Wii console," said Iwata in an Analyst Q&A at last week's E3, "but of course, at some point in the future, that need will arise.
"We currently do not have an answer as to what point in the future that need will come.
"When the time comes for us to release a new platform on the home console side, the question becomes how do we convince and demonstrate to those third parties that the next platform is going to be a success? And if we are able to do that, then the third parties will come to the table with their content, and to that, we'll be able to add our own first-party content."

"Considering the current penetration rate of 3D television sets in ordinary households," continued Iwata, "we don't think that there's much reality in creating a new hardware system that would support 3D visuals as a home console.
"Of course, at some point in the future, when the installed base for 3D televisions is such that it's no longer a rarity for people to have one, then certainly, when that point in time comes, whichever console Nintendo would release at that point would most likely take advantage of 3D technology."
Wii launched in the UK in December 2006 and has been an unmitigated success worldwide, but the console is significantly less powerful than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 which were both released around the same time.
