Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has said that he thinks criticising the company's approach to online gaming is "rather unfair" and that "Nintendo has never been less than proactive in that kind of endeavour".
Speaking to EDGE about the firm's "small steps" towards online gaming, Miyamoto said:
"To be honest, I think it's rather unfair whenever I hear such comments - that Nintendo isn't proactive when it comes to its online strategy.
"The fact of the matter is that we always want all Wii consoles to be connected online, all the time, so Nintendo has never been less than proactive in that kind of endeavour.

But when it comes to out endeavours that try to take advantage of internet technology, where we can provide our customers with more fun and entertainment, then I think we can say we have been very, very proactive and well received."
The Japanese giant has regularly come under fire for its backwards approach to online gaming.
Playing a Wii game online often requires each player to know each other's Friend Code prior to playing, while certain games also require further codes to be inputted.
Nintendo has often maintained that this approach is purely for security and to help protect children playing online.
Wii's most recent notable online game Monster Hunter Tri launched two weeks ago. It's currently sitting at number 26 in the All Format Charts.
