The 12th March marks the welcome return of the Hanabi Festival to the Wii Virtual Console. That effectively means that retro games that previously haven't been released in Europe finally get a release.

Included in the titles announced by Nintendo are:

Ironclad

A top down shooter originally released in Japan on the Neo Geo CD in 1996 and going for over £100 on Ebay currently. A cartridge version was also developed but not released until last year, when that version was released on the Japanese Virtual Console. All the text in the original game displayed in English on western consoles, so there shouldn't be a problem following the story. Expect there to be big problems following what's going on in terms of action though, given it's a Japanese shmup.

It was then released on Virtual Console in North America in 2007.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

This one gets very complicated as it's been released in multiple versions on multiple platforms and in multiple territories, but it was originally a PC Engine game that was released in Japan in 1993. It was eventually released in Europe as part of the Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles compilation on PSP in 2007. Anyway, it's a decent entry in the Castlevania series, so check it out.

Lode Runner

This is the 1984 NES version of the classic platformer that you may remember from the Commodore 64 days, which was one of the first games that allowed you to create and save your own levels. The NES version doesn't look a great deal like the C64 game, but hasn't previously been available in Europe.

No prices were in the press release.
