Burnout Crash’s creative director Alex Ward has revealed that the upcoming top-down smash ‘em up was initially intended as a user generated content-focussed game for the Wii, “where you drew the road” with the Wii remote.
“(Burnout Crash) started off a long time ago,” said Ward speaking to Giant Bomb.
“The original version started on the Wii, and it was a user-created game where you drew the road with a wand, and we thought if we made Crash mode you can make it all yourself.
“We did that for a few months and it actually turned out to be quite boring. One of our philosophies at Criterion is just ‘cos we’ve made it doesn’t mean we can’t delete it. So if we have to throw something away and shelve it, we could talk for hours about the number of ideas we’ve just thrown away because you get there and it doesn’t quite work.”
How could we forget, Alex? We were one of those eagerly looking forward to planes in Burnout Paradise.
However, Ward revealed that the latest version of the game has been built on Microsoft’s XNA technology which has enabled the team to do “some amazing stuff,” including building Kinect functionality into the Xbox 360 version.
“The game came together in about four weeks,” continued Ward, “and that’s amazing.”
Burnout Crash, which looks absolutely nothing like previous Burnout games, launches on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network in the autumn.
