Anyone hoping to see a bunch of aliens wobbling around onstage, tentacles wrapped around guitars and drumsticks, singing along to the latest hits in Klingonspeak would do well to temper their expectations. Maxis's Wii spin-off of its quirky evolution sim is more Ratchet and Clank than Rock Band.
In fact, it's arguably closer to idiosyncratic GameCube import Cubivore, where you had to evolve your geometric creature by fighting and mating. No sign of the latter in Spore Hero, but after you've created your own weird and wonderful avatar - in a more limited fashion than the PC tool which spawned a world of alien penises - you can get stuck into plenty of the former.
It's a kind of survival-of-the-fittest thing, seeing you run, jump, bite and smash your extraterrestrial foes in various arenas. But that's not all you'll be doing - other creatures will hand out (or tentacle out in some cases) challenges where you might have to enter a race or befriend them by getting your groove on in a brief rhythm-action interlude.
With the promise of being able to add parts to your creature and upgrade their abilities as you progress, RPG-style, Spore Hero looks like a delightfully Darwinian treat.
