This was definitely the decade where gaming breached the mainstream and even though some players may gawk at Grandma having a go at Rock Band this Christmas, for better or worse gaming is now enjoyed by more people than ever before. The following titles were key in that transformation:
5. Guitar Hero (2005 - Playstation 2)
Remember when this multi-million selling franchise just appeared on one system? How about when Harmonix were at the helm before their high profile split with Activision to join EA? It's been a rollercoaster ride for this franchise and even though the plastic guitar bubble may burst over the next few years, it's still one of gaming's most widely accepted staples. 4. Wii Sports (2006 - Wii)
Ah, the first attempt by Nintendo to utilise the motion sensing remote control known annoyingly as the Wiimote. We were all so sceptical at first, but after a few minutes playing Tennis or Bowling, even the most cynical naysayer was hooked on what was essentially a collection of elaborate mini-games. It has become hard to remember the bright new world which Nintendo wanted us to believe in, before our expectations were dashed by sub-par waggle-a-thons like Red Steel and Boogie. But forget all that, because there was a time when we believed that motion control enhanced gaming was the way of the future and it's largely down to this excellent title.
Nintendo recognised its potential that's why it was bundled with every console in western territories. It isn't perfect and you'll very quickly get your fill, but there's a very good reason that after nearly four years this is still the most fondly remembered Wii title. It's also the only game where my Nan can reliable beat me and for that Nintendo, I salute you.
