PlayStation Vita launch title WipEout 2048 draws a similar amount of polygons per frame as the PS3′s WipEout HD, Game Director Graeme Ankers has revealed, adding that the shader system used on the portable futuristic racer runs at “the same level of complexity” as its bigger home console brother.
“This (footage) is taken direct from PlayStation Vita, really pushing and showing the power of the device,” said Ankers speaking to attendees at Eurogamer Expo last week. “It looks absolutely fantastic on Vita, really shows the power.
“We’re drawing about 250,000 polygons per frame, which is pretty comparable to what we did on the PS3 versions as well. Our shader system is the same level of complexity.”
According to Ankers, everyone that’s seen 2048 has been impressed by what they’ve seen.
“People have been coming up to us and saying it looks better than what we’re doing on PS3, which is a real compliment. This is pretty much the biggest WipEout we’ve ever made.”
We managed to catch a glimpse of WipEout 2048 running on Vita at the show and were blown away by its visuals.
PlayStation Vita’s tech specs have often been compared to those of PlayStation 3. The handheld device features a whopping quad-core processor and 512MB RAM; an unprecedented amount for any console, let alone a handheld.
Crossplay technology will also let Vita players go up against PS3 WipEout HD players in competitive multiplayer.
PlayStation Vita goes on sale in Japan on December 17th. It’s expected to go on sale in the UK early next year.
