PlayStation Vita Launch Rugby

Published on August 12th, 2011

Good news, Rugby fans: it looks like the bus ride to Twickenham is about to get a whole lot more entertaining. Sidhe Games has announced that a version of will launch alongside the handheld when the platform releases next year, adding that developing on the device has been “smooth sailing so far”.

“When Sony approached us behind the scenes about Vita, we knew there was an additional opportunity to bring rugby union to handheld in a way that has not been viable before, said Sidhe’s Mario Wynands talking to GameSpot. “The PS Vita is a great device. Given the features and abilities of the platform, there is very little that we have to compromise in bringing Rugby Challenge across to it from PS3.

“The incremental effort required to bring Rugby Challenge to Vita is relatively small, meaning the cost has been kept low. And the timing of release means that we can be a launch title for the device, which puts us in an advantageous position sales-wise. Combining those things means there was a sound business case for pursuing a PS Vita version of Rugby Challenge.”

PlayStation Vita is the successor to Sony’s aging PSP console, due for release in North America and Europe early next year, with many publishers having already pledged their support to the handheld.

The device features a 5″ OLED touchscreen, a quad-core processor and a six-axis motion sensor, with critics comparing its graphical capabilities to those of the PlayStation 3.

PlayStation Vita launches in Japan later this year. An Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of Jonah Lomu Rugby launches in September.
