An upcoming firmware update for PlayStation Vita will add the option for users to record video and use a new Map application, which tracks your location.
According to Andriasang, Vita’s 1.6 update will let users track their whereabouts on a map and plot a route, similar to existing GPSs. There’s no word on which model of Vita will support the Map app, but given the tech involved, we’d expect it to be exclusive to the 3G version.
In addition, 1.6 will add the option to record video via the handheld’s camera. The camera is currently locked to still photos.
Don’t expect HD-quality video, though – according to specs released by Sony, 640×480 is the highest resolution the Vita’s camera is capable of.
Other changes include the Vita’s Home button flashing blue while being charged, and alterations to allow for the roll-out of Sony Entertainment Network IDs. A Mac OS version of the device’s Content Management Assistant program will also be available.
It’s not known which version of the firmware will come pre-installed on UK Vita units at launch.
PlayStation Vita launches in the UK on Wednesday, February 22nd. For a full list of bundles available, check out our Vita Buyer’s Guide.
