Lost In Translation?

With Chinatown Wars heading to PSP later in the year, we ask the question; will it survive the jump intact?

While the announcement of any new Grand Theft Auto game on PSP or otherwise is something to get excited about, the cynic within me can't help but feel that the upcoming PSP port of Chinatown Wars is simply a last ditch effort to recoup funds lost by the lower than expected sales of the original DS version.

And that it did with much aplomb, garnering widespread positive feedback from fans and critics alike around its March release for its inventive use of the feature.

Which makes me question how exactly Rockstar plan on handling the crossover to PSP; their pledges of "upscaled widescreen graphics" and "enhanced lighting and animation" are far from the ambitious promises we're used to from the studio, after all. From a narrative perspective, though well written, Chinatown Wars' story was far from the strongest in the series either, while the top-down gameplay may seem like a step backward from the fully 3D world current PlayStation gamers know and love.

Of course, with nothing yet shown it's far too early to start criticising Rockstar's decision to port it over, and if anyone can pull a surprise out of the bag it's them. And, as SCEA president Jack Tretton is quick to point out, "the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation"; perhaps bringing GTA home isn't quite such a bad idea, after all.
