Dante's Inferno is filled to the brim with imaginative boss fights based on the first poem of Dante Alighiero's The Divine Comedy. Here are the first few you'll encounter as you descend through the nine Circles of Hell:

Death

You'll have to face off against Death before having even started your descent into Hell. Having been mortally wounded in an attack within the city of Acre, Dante encounters Death who attempts to persuade the warrior into coming with him to the afterlife. Refusing, Dante battles with Death, eventually turning the tables and forcing the Grim Reaper to his knees. Begging for mercy, Death comes to a gory end as Dante slices him in two with his own scythe.

King Minos

Minos is the Judge of the Dead, meaning that he spends his time in Hell sniffing out the sins of the recently deceased before condemning to an eternity in one of the Nine Circles. Having stumbled into his 'House of Pain', Minos becomes furious with Dante, attacking him using a combination of his tentacles and his ability to let out a dazzling shriek. The key to defeating Minos is being patient and avoiding his attacks, before unleash hell on his exposed abdomen. Hurt him enough and you'll be given the chance to perform a QTE, seeing him off completely via a particularly gruesome death involving a tongue and a wheel of spikes.

Marc Antony & Cleopatra

These two lovers soon become your greatest enemies as you enter Lust, the second Circle of Hell. The colossal Cleopatra will attack you throughout the level, ejecting unblessed babies from her nipples as you climb the tower of Lust. To distract her, Dante must position fire-breathing statues towards her, using a combination of platforming and activating timed switches, all the while attacking her hand that clings onto the side of the tower. Upon reaching the top you'll go one-on-one with Marc Antony, who adorns a shield and suit of armour but can be soon felled provided you've spent your Souls on acquiring more powerful moves. With her lover gone, Cleopatra soon falls to her knees, making for an easy kill for Dante.

Cerberus

Thought you knew Cerberus? Think again. This three-headed monster, which you'll encounter almost as soon as you set foot into Gluttony, the third Circle of Hell, is actually a set of mouths extended from the head of a particularly large - and particularly hungry sinner. Much like with King Minos, the trick to defeating Cerberus is to avoid its attacks, before beating it with your scythe or Holy Cross when it comes to rest. Attack it enough and you'll eventually get the chance to lop off each of the mouths one by one.

These are only a few of the epic boss fights you'll face in the full version of Dante's Inferno, which releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP on February 5th 2010.
