You've got to admire a developer who's prepared to admit fault with their game. "The first game was a bit repetitive," coyly confesses Assassin's Creed II's Creative Director Patrice Desilets - and he's certainly not wrong. While undeniably pretty, the original Assassin's Creed's tedious side-missions tainted what would otherwise have been a modern classic.

Ezio performs a leap of faith
Of course, being aware of any underlying problems and acting on them are two entirely different things, but it's something that Desilets is determined to address for his sequel. "The main focus for Assassin's Creed II is about giving more variety to the player. This time around it's about changing the experience, changing the pace, surprising the player with different gameplay," he says.

We'll also have access to duel concealed blades, allowing us to take down two targets at once, while a new economy system will let Ezio call on the services of friends and businessmen within the environment. And though those side-missions will still exist, they won't be restricted to just a handful of mission types, Desilets reassures us.

But what of Ezio himself? Well, he's a bit of a socialite says Desilets, a character far more at home with "running away from the fathers of beautiful girls" than guards with spiky metal sticks. That all changes, of course, following the butchering of his family early on in the game, sparking Ezio to depart on a trail of vengeance to wreak justice to those responsible.

So, there's set to be improvements aplenty for Ubisoft's sequel, and coupled with the game's stunning visuals, Assassin's Creed II is shaping up to be a killer title in this winter's line-up.
