By contrast, Xbox 360 only has Splinter Cell Conviction as a console exclusive in the same period, making this a potentially dominant time for Sony's machine.

In comparison to last year's 'holiday' period, traditionally the strongest time for any console, it's clear that this is the biggest quarter ever for Sony's third generation PlayStation. The strategy is three pronged - a Triple A shooter that hits the biggest gaming market on consoles, an interesting, brave and ambitious effort to appease the hardcore, and the sequel to one of the most commercially and critically succesful franchises of all time.

It's taken time for the PS3 to hit its stride. A lack of regular killer exclusives and some subpar versions of cross platform games has damaged its reputation amongst consumers, but if all three of these First Quarter exclusives reach their potential, there's ever chance this could be the PlayStation 3's first truly dominant year in the console war. Competition breeds quality, and the winner's always the same. The gamers.
