Reports are emerging that the PS3 Slim has been a huge success, helping the console sell more than ten times the number of units sold the previous week - an increase of over 1000%.

Hardware and software sales both increase as PS3 Slim proves a big hitChart-Track, the company which compiles all sales figures in the UK, gave the figures to GI.biz - while the firm never reveals numbers, the climb was described as "a huge increase".

Particularly given the fact that Chart-Track also revealed that the PS3 outsold the DS, Wii and Xbox 360 - all of which roughly sold the same amount last week - by a ratio of around 3:1.

Hardware and software sales both increase as PS3 Slim proves a big hitPresident of SCEE Andrew House was clearly pleased by the news - if not entirely surprised. "what I've heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for - a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction."
Meanwhile, it seems new PS3 owners have been out in force buying up games for their shiny - or, rather matte - new console. PS3 software sales were up 17 percent this week, with titles like LittleBigPlanet, KillZone 2, Fight Night Round 4 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 all re-entering the charts. The PS3 SKU of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare shot straight back into the number six slot of the Top 40 Individual Formats chart, while Call of Duty: World at War got a not-insignificant boost, rising from 22 to 9.
In Japan, the Slim was an even bigger success, shifting 150,000 units in just four days. Given last week's abysmal sales, the rise was an astonishing 15000% - which just goes to show, without actual figures, it's hard to say that the Slim has been an unbridled success. It's certainly had a significant impact upon sales, but time will tell whether this is a temporary boost or whether it could have a long-term impact on which way this current console generation goes.
