Ubisoft has officially announced Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, due for release on consoles and handhelds in May 2010.

The title, which is said to be a direct sequel to 2003's brilliant Sands of Time, will launch alongside the upcoming film in just under six months' time.

The Forgotten Sands was rumoured to be in production when series creator superannuation spotted a trademark request filed last month by series creator Jordan Mechner. There's no word on whether The Forgotten Sands will retain Prince of Persia 2008's artsy cel-shaded visuals or opt for the grittier, realistic look of its predecessors. We hope it's the latter.

Details are still scarce on the project, but Ubisoft promise that The Forgotten Sands will feature "many of the fan-favourite elements from the original series" as well as "new gameplay innovations" probably involving time.
