Were you getting concerned over the prospect of physical copies of games disappearing from store shelves and the smell of a new video game manual being lost forever? Don't worry. EA's Senior VP of Europe Jens Uwe Intat has said that he believes "boxed product will remain important" for another "20 years or so".
Talking to MCV, Uwe Intat stated:
"I don't plan to retire for another 20 years or so and I'm pretty sure boxed product will remain important for that time.
"We will, of course, see more and more digital distribution, sometimes for full games, but even more so for additional content. But in many cases I still think a physical product is the start of that journey and that will continue for a very long time.
"I even think it will take many years before digital distribution becomes more prominent that sic physical media."
Uwe Intat also believes that the physical media market may not fall as sharply this year as it did during 2009, commenting that "the packaged goods market might remain stable, or there might be only a very slight decrease, less than last year."
According to a report published by Chart-Track yesterday, sales of physical media fell 18% year-on-year in 2009.
But what's your take on the DD vs. boxed product debate? Are you happy with the convenience of digital distribution, or do you like building up a physical collection? Let us know by leaving a comment.
