To coincide with the release of Sony's 3D compatible Bravia LCD TV this summer, Sony Computer Entertainment will launch a firmware update for PlayStation 3 that will add 3D support.
"3D is a major part of our initiatives in 2010 and we're currently developing 3D stereoscopic games to come in conjunction with the launch of Sony's 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TV in summer 2010," confirmed John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America in a Q&A session with Pocket Lint.
Sony first outlined its interest to enter 3D gaming at E3 last year where it hosted a 3D arena that showcased Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, WipEout HD, and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift showcasing the stereoscopic effect.
Koller confirmed that the PS3 would receive two separate firmware upgrades, one for 3D stereoscopic games and the other for 3D BD movies. Sony has yet to pass comment on what franchises may receive the 3D treatment but Koller did suggest that they'll be more big news at some point this year.
"With 3D gaming and Motion Control technologies just around the corner, 2010 will show just how PlayStation is leading the innovation curve in the industry and that the PS3 truly does everything," he enthused.
