It looks as though you're going to have to sacrifice those crystal clear "Full HD" images if you want to enjoy the fruits of 3D gaming on the PlayStation 3.
At the Develop conference in Brighton last week, Sony has stated that 3D games on the PS3 will not sport a 1080p output resolution, but will have the image split into two 720p images so that performance won't be affected. This was recently demonstrated with Super Stardust HD, which runs in a native 1080p but was downscaled for its 3D release on PS3 a few weeks ago. The cap on the output resolution will exist for all 3D games on Sony's console.
So, what does this mean for the consumer? Well, it means that you certainly won't get the most out of your expensive HD TV, but Sony reckons that artists who have worked on the games can't even tell the difference between the two resolutions so the general consumer shouldn't be worried. You will still be able to get the most of your HD TV with 3D Blu-Ray movies, which will run at 1080p.
Are you concerned about the drop in visual performance for 3D games on PS3?
