After supersleuth Superogatory uncovered New Line's short optioning of Heavy Rain, it got me thinking. Just who would play each of the game's four main characters, and the supporting cast? Let's get stuck in...

Ethan Mars

Ethan is a fairly quiet chap, small in stature and frame, with a kindness in his eyes and a fire in his belly. If Heavy Rain is made into a major Hollywood film, Ethan would likely be its main protagonist, so the studio would probably rather hang the picture around an established name. Unfortunately, the obvious name is Tom Cruise - he fits the bill perfectly - but if New Line fancied going in slightly edgier direction, a Clive Owen type could work.

Top Pick: Tom Cruise

Our Pick: Clive Owen

Others: Jon Rhys-Meyers, Jake Gyllenhaal

Norman Jayden

He's sharp, cocksure and quick-witted, but also pretty screwed up. You'd need someone who can deliver a powerful line while masking an inner torment, and someone who would be happy to play second fiddle to the more dominant characters. Mark Wahlberg's performance in The Departed is a touchstone here, as is Mark Ruffalo in Zodiac. Perhaps a younger actor like Ryan Gosling could fit the bill though - he certainly has the range.

Top Pick: Mark Wahlberg

Our Pick: Ryan Gosling

Others: Casey Affleck, Jeffrey Donavan

Madison Paige

Jacqui Ainsley does a tremendous job in the game, but probably wouldn't get the nod in a high-profile flick. Madison is all about strength and unassuming sexuality, so an actress known firstly for her emotive powers than her looks would be ideal. Maggie Gyllenhaal would be ideal, but perhaps there's room for An Education's Carey Mulligan?

Top Pick: Maggie Gyllenhaal

Our Pick: Carey Mulligan

Scott Shelby

Shelby requires a physically large screen presence that's capable of warmth and kindness, the kind of thing John Goodman used to hoover up fifteen years ago. Now, perhaps a James Gandolfini would be a better fit?

Top Pick: James Gandolfini

Our Pick: James Gandolfini

Others: Micheal Chiklis, Brian Cox

Supporting cast...

Lauren Winters - Catherine Keener

Charles Kramer - Charles Dance

Gordi Kramer - Paul Dano

Mad Jack - Rampage Jackson

The Doctor - James Cromwell

Motel Clerk - Clint Howard

Shaun Mars - Max Records

Lieutenant Blake - Carlos Bernard

So what do you think? Any more obvious fits?
