Our list has compiled the most influential games of the past decade and even though some selections have been fairly controversial, we're sure nobody will disagree with this one. Congratulations Claude, if that is your real name.

Grand Theft Auto 3
And thus began the trend of the main protagonist walking into the camera.
1. Grand Theft Auto 3 (2001 - Playstation 2)

Grand Theft Auto 3
Kenji's Casino always offered a good mission or two.
After the commercial disaster that was GTA2, Rockstar knew that they'd have to do something dramatically different with the third chapter and they inadvertently kick started a new genre, open-world. The fictional city of Liberty City was unlike anything gamers had seen before. Having an entire world to explore and, much more importantly, destroy was something many gamers had only dreamt of but Rockstar had dutifully delivered.

We're sure the amusing radio stations helped, but it was eccentric mission structure which really sealed the deal.

Grand Theft Auto 3
Patroits were always good for a quick, and destructive, joyride.
Looking back it's impossible to think of a world without the magnum opus of sandbox titles without which we would never have seen games like Red Faction Guerilla, True Crime, Saints Row, Spiderman 2, Mercenaries, Crackdown, Prototype, Just Cause and literally hundreds more ever bob onto the surface. The sandbox concept has experienced many innovations since then, but to truly appreciate where we've come you have to journey to where we've been and thankfully GTA 3 still holds up very well.

Grand Theft Auto 3
This was the first time gamers were introduced to the joys of a six star wanted level.
Perhaps what is most impressive is even after GTA 4, San Andreas and Vice City the original open-world title still holds a special place in many gamers hearts. The main protagonist may never speak and the missions may have been emulated hundreds of times since, there's still something devilishly delightful about destroying Liberty City circa 2001.

Whether you were helping corrupt policemen, eliminating Triads, exploding Mafia types, tailing snitches or distributing spank - Rockstar set the precedent with GTA 3. Obviously there are many better games out there in 2009, but this got the ball rolling for Take Two in a way which no other title has.

Lets all raise a toast, get out that dusty disc, pop into in your PC, Xbox or PS2 and enjoy the top game of the decade. Congratulations Rockstar it's well deserved.
