Spartacus Legends will launch as a free-to-play title on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Ubisoft announced at its Digital Days event held in Paris yesterday.
Ubi will monetise on the arena brawler by allowing players to buy better equipment instead of simply unlocking it through gameplay.
However, a fame level will stop new players from accessing the best weapons off the bat.
Spartacus Legends, which is a tie-in game with the Spartacus TV series, will allow players to customise and pit their gladitors in visceral one-on-one bouts with a dash of gory dismemberment.
The game is slated for an early 2013 release on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store.
