Motion-based gaming is the subject of much debate and scrutiny from die-hard gamers probably because these games succeed in making us all look a little daft in the living room.
Kung-Fu LIVE may look like a PlayStation Move title but Sony’s wand controller is absent from this set-up. You and whatever items you have lying around step in front of the PlayStation Eye camera to flail your body around slapping, kicking and shoving foes into submission in a comic book inspired world.
Each gesture is exaggerated for ‘comic’ effect turning your movements into sweeping punches that zoom across the screen. In addition to a number of special moves, players are encouraged to use household items and seamlessly translate them into weapons to clobber your opponents.
The story mode will see you bust-a-move through waves of enemies, take down towering colossi and pull dramatic poses to appear in each strip. It’s a jokey romp that only the fittest of gamers will be able to burn through in one sitting. Multiplayer confines additional players to controller inputs but for obvious reasons.
Unfortunately, Kung-Fu LIVE’s strict requirements fail to keep up with the game’s ambition. Free Motion is impressive tech but lengthy set ups which require some serious tweaking set back what should be a simple and accessible experience. If you don’t have the available space (7X9 ft is recommended) Kung-Fu LIVE is an instant write-off.
Briefly Speaking: Kung-Fu LIVE is a pretty cool idea but without an adequate arrangement, it’s a nightmare to enjoy. Those with ample space and good lighting should be able to get a kick out of this; otherwise it is hit and miss at the best of times.
