Starbreeze is set to acquire Payday: The Heist developer Overkill Software.
According to reports published online this morning, the Syndicate developer is still awaiting final approval from its shareholders before the transaction takes place – though the acquisition largely appears to be a done deal.
Stockholm-based studio Overkill Software was founded in September 2009 by a group of “hardened industry veterans.”
The developer released its first – and only – game, Payday: The Heist, back in October 2011.
The game is an online co-op first-person shooter that sees groups of players launching heists on banks. The PS3/PC game scored a Metacritic score of 70/76 respectively.
Starbreeze, which developed The Chronicles of Riddick series, the original Darkness and this year’s Syndicate, is currently developing an XBLA/PSN title and a free-to-play PC game.
The studio is also based in Stockholm, Sweden.
Company of Heroes 2, Batman: Arkham Origins, Grand Theft Auto V, Watch_Dogs, Beyond: Two Souls and Night of the Rabbit previews.

I’d love see some new direction in Payday. Even just overhauling the combat would be a great start: firing a weapon in that game is an awful experience.
